The Graduate School of Journalism at Columbia University invites applications for the position of Manager, Annual Giving. The incumbent identifies, cultivates, and solicits gifts from donors, prospects, and volunteers who have the capacity to make annual gifts at the leadership level to the Graduate School of Journalism. Reporting to the Director of Development, the incumbent leads the management and expansion of the School’s Annual Fund.

The Manager, Annual Giving, will work with a portfolio of approximately 250 Journalism alumni prospects and in conjunction with development and alumni relations staff at the Journalism School, in the Office of Alumni and Development, and staff from other university teams.

The Manager will also lead the vision and execution of the direct mail/marketing strategy, including creating appeals, reports, and other relevant correspondence.

Responsibilities

  • Plan high-end annual fundraising events and activities for top annual giving donors and prospects. Identify and prioritize prospects, and personally solicit leadership annual fund gifts from selected prospects.
  • Identify new prospects for the Dean’s Circle (the Journalism School’s annual fund leadership society), reactivate lapsed donors, and increase levels of support with active members. Create opportunities for engaging these donors with an eye toward demonstrating the impact of their giving.
  • Create strategy and fundraising dollar and donor goals for the entire Annual Fund population. Coordinate plans for direct mail, telemarketing, and email on an ongoing basis with Annual Fund Programs colleagues. The Manager, Annual Giving, will monitor incoming gifts and ensure that proper stewardship and pledge follow-up occurs.
  • Work closely with Major Gift staff on the annual solicitation of high-end annual gifts from major gift prospects, with Planned Giving staff as appropriate, and with staff in other schools as needed on prospects holding multiple degrees.
  • Document solicitation information in university tracking system; monitor system to assure proper recording of information and gifts.

Minimum Qualifications

  • Education: Bachelor’s degree and/or its equivalent required.
  • Experience: Minimum 3–5 years’ related experience.
