Associate Director of Athletic Giving, Alumni & Parent Engagement

The candidate is responsible for raising current philanthropic support for the College, primarily by:

  • Managing athletics current-use fundraising efforts for individual teams and the Garnet Club.
  • Managing the Garnet Club Advancement Council, a 20-25 person volunteer council focused on advancing athletics at Swarthmore.
  • Managing student philanthropy efforts, including the Student Philanthropy Council and class giving campaigns for all four undergraduate classes.
  • Managing and evolving these programs and relationships in coordination with other Alumni & Parent Engagement efforts is essential to the success of the department.

Essential Responsibilities:


  • Coordinate current-use fundraising efforts for the Garnet Club and 22+ teams.
  • Manage the Garnet Club Advancement Council, an athletics advancement committee of 20-25 volunteers composed of alumni, parents, and friends. Execute 12-18 council meetings per year, with a minimum of one on-campus meeting.
  • Execute and manage comprehensive digital fundraising campaigns as they relate to athletics (an athletics day of giving) by working with members of the marketing team, Advancement Communications, and other campus partners.
  • Write, edit, and manage the logistics of sending 20-40 athletics appeals per year (print and electronic), working closely with coaches and/or volunteers on the development of each appeal.
  • Collaborate with Athletics and the events team for the planning and implementation of special events and programs designed to attract, identify, cultivate, and steward athletic prospects and donors, including, but are not limited to Garnet Weekend, games, Hall of Fame Dinner, and Athletic alumni receptions.
  • Serve as the point person to Athletics on current-use fundraising projects for specific teams and the Garnet Club.
  • Recruit fundraising volunteers for the Garnet Club Advancement Council, the Young Alumni Ambassadors Program and other available volunteer opportunities in order to increase alumni engagement and maximize fundraising potential.
  • Partner and assist Athletics with securing and managing corporate sponsorships for Swarthmore’s Golf for the Garnet event.
  • Serve on the Garnet Club Hall of Fame selection committee, the Golf for the Garnet planning committee, and other athletics committees as needed and when appropriate.
  • Track success of athletics fundraising efforts through reports and other data-driven mechanisms.

Student Philanthropy

  • Manage the Student Philanthropy Council (SPC), a 15-30 person student-led council. Responsible for recruiting, training, and advising students on SPC. Includes managing two to four paid student positions.
  • Oversee a Class Gift program for all four undergraduate classes by enlisting, engaging, training, and advising student volunteers from each undergraduate class.
  • Manage a student-philanthropy-education program by implementing creative, effective ways to educate the student body about philanthropy.
  • With SPC collaboration, develop and execute 4-8 student-focused events per academic year.
  • Coordinate 10-15 SPC meetings per year.
  • Develop effective materials to facilitate productive fundraising practices that comply with department and College standards.

Additional Responsibilities:

  • Help maintain The Swarthmore Fund Web pages related to these programs, as needed.
  • Attends and assists other College Advancement staff at College events as needed.
  • Serves voluntarily on ad-hoc or standing College committees, as appropriate and with approval of supervisor.
  • Takes advantage of opportunities for professional development at least twice annually.
  • Performs other assignments as directed by his or her supervisor.

Supervisory Responsibilities:

Supervises 2-4 paid student positions serving on the Student Philanthropy Council.

Required Qualifications:

  • A minimum of five (5) years working in an annual giving program, institutional advancement, or equivalent professional experience.
    Strong organizational abilities. Attention to detail and ability to handle multiple and varied tasks independently, while also working collaboratively.
  • Strong written and oral communication skills, including in imaginative and persuasive writing.
  • Skill in dealing with people, using tact and diplomacy, and the ability to maintain a high level of confidentiality.
  • Strong customer service skills.
  • Skill in articulating the value of higher education.
  • Ability to use a variety of computer applications, including demonstrated skills in the use of word processing and spreadsheets (e.g. Microsoft Word, Excel, Google Docs and Sheets), fundraising databases (e.g. Banner) and reporting software (e.g.
    Argos), electronic mail software (e.g. Emma), Web page design software (e.g. Drupal), desktop publishing software, and Internet applications.
  • Ability to work evenings, weekends, or as needed to complete projects or meet heavy demand.
  • Excellent communication skills, including written and oral.
  • Valid US driver’s license and ability to travel locally and regionally when travel becomes viable again.
  • This position will work remotely currrently as the College limits on campus work. When the College resumes normal operations the position will work on campus.

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Advanced degree.
  • Experience working in a college or university setting, especially in a comprehensive fund-raising campaign environment.
