Founded in 1810, The Lawrenceville School, one of the country’s premier independent schools, is located in central New Jersey, five miles south of Princeton, 55 miles south of New York City, and 40 miles north of Philadelphia. Lawrenceville publicly launched Emerge Transformed, The Campaign for Lawrenceville, a $425M campaign in May 2021 which will conclude in June of 2023. Lawrenceville’s goal is the largest campaign goal in the history of independent schools in America. Lawrenceville is a member of the Eight Schools Association (ESA).

Summary

Leading a team of three, the Director of Alumni Engagement directs all aspects of the alumni engagement program at The Lawrenceville School. The Director is responsible for creating a robust calendar of annual alumni events (both in-person and virtual); directing the activities of regional clubs and affinity groups; ensuring A&D’s alignment with most recent alumni networking technologies; cultivating the next generation of engaged Lawrentians by focusing on young alumni interests and offerings; leading the diversity, equity and inclusion efforts of the Office of Alumni & Development in conjunction with the Office of Multicultural Affairs; advising the activities of the Alumni Association Executive Committee, partnering closely with volunteer leadership; and carrying out any other activities associated with day-to-day operations of the alumni engagement area with a focus on alumni engagement metrics. This position is part of the Alumni & Development senior management team and will work closely with other members of A&D’s Senior Staff to coordinate activities related to alumni.

Responsibilities

  • Create and execute a robust program of alumni events (100+ annually), representing both in-person events (when possible) and virtual offerings.  Oversee all aspects of the School’s annual Alumni Weekend.
  • Direct all aspects of Lawrenceville’s regional club and affinity group activities, in conjunction with the Associate Director for Regional and Affinity Affairs. Hire, train and support class secretaries, regional club chairs and affinity group leadership.
  • Ensure A&D is in alignment with best practices for alumni networking and engagement, researching new technologies and educating the alumni body on offerings available to assist in connections to classmates and industry peers while focusing on alumni engagement metrics.
  • Maintain a focus on the activities of young alumni to ensure their continued engagement and participation in School activities. Provide relevant opportunities for networking and mentorship. Regularly survey and solicit feedback from this constituency group to ensure the School is meeting its needs.
  • Lead Alumni & Development’s diversity, equity and inclusion efforts in conjunction with the Office of Multicultural Affairs. Participate on volunteer committees and assist the Multicultural Affairs Office in responding to alumni questions and concerns.
  • Advise on all activities of the Alumni Association Executive Committee, managing several subcommittees and partnering with volunteer leadership to address issues of interest to alumni constituents.
  • Supervise the Associate Director for Regional and Affinity Affairs, Advancement Events Manager and the Assistant to Alumni Engagement.  Provide coaching, set goals, and measure progress.
  • Coordinate with A&D leadership to execute a coordinated strategy related to alumni engagement activities.

Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s degree required.
  • Leadership experience in the development/advancement field, with a preference for a background in independent school education, at secondary or higher education level.
  • Previous direct experience managing a team is highly preferred.
  • Lawrenceville alumni with educational or marketing and communications backgrounds are encouraged to apply.

  • Must have knowledge of, or experience with, digital, social media, and diverse mediums of communication.
  • Ability to work earnestly and cooperatively in a team environment with co-workers and volunteers, and to give and receive feedback on common projects and tasks.
  • Ability to work in a friendly and collegial manner; a thorough appreciation for the goals and mission of Lawrenceville and the interests of independent secondary education.
  • Exceptional organizational, interpersonal, and communication skills; both written and verbal.
  • Enthusiastic and effective manager and mentor, with a proven record of team leadership.
  • Demonstrate unquestioned professional and personal integrity, combined with a strong strategic orientation.
  • Enthusiasm for and willingness to travel extensively on behalf of the School (5-7 days per month, when business travel resumes).
  • Possess the ability to recruit, train, motivate, and retain a corps of committed volunteers, with the ability to work cooperatively and respectfully with all types of volunteers. Possesses the ability to navigate conflict in order to achieve successful outcomes.
  • Familiarity with Microsoft Office and Google products, as well as donor databases (Abila Millennium preferred).
