Departmental Overview

The Office of Annual Programs supports UC Berkeley public mission to provide public education, research and public service by increasing financial support from alumni, parents, students, and friends. The department raises $15-$20 million annually and is responsible for engaging 22,000+ donors and volunteers. The goals of this department are to: 1) significantly raise the amount of discretionary funds for the Chancellor, deans, and program directors, 2) identify and cultivate new leadership and major gift prospects, 3) increase the number of annual donors, 4) engage, cultivate, and steward volunteers, and 5) instill a culture of giving among students and recent graduates. 

Position Overview 

The Executive Director serves as one of the chief strategists for fundraising in University Development and Alumni Relations (UDAR). Reporting to the Associate Vice Chancellor, Development, this individual manages a department of approximately 33 FTE and a budget of $4.5 million. The Executive Director oversees three large and complex areas 1) Direct Response Marketing which provides marketing services to the schools/colleges and other departments, 2) Volunteer Campaigns which involve more than 200+ alumni, parent and student fundraising volunteers serving on 5 campaign committees, and 3) the Leadership Annual Giving Program which develops and executes multi-channel strategies and tactics for acquiring, retaining, and upgrading leadership annual donors to Berkeley. Combined, these fundraising programs will benefit the campus in several ways:

  • Increase the number of donors who contribute gifts up to $100,000
  • Provide an increased and predictable source of discretionary funds available each year to the Chancellor and Deans
  • Identify a steady pool of new potential major donors for campus units and the campus at large
  • Establish foundational philanthropic programs for students and young alumni which will have long lasting impact on the overall development effort


Leadership and management oversight

  • Responsible for leading department and teams raising between $15 – $20 million in private gifts annually from individual donors; gifts range from small annual gifts to six figure gifts.
  • Oversee staff of approximately 33 employees and annual budget of $4.5 million.
  • Supervise three directors responsible for managing and executing complex and sophisticated fundraising programs and ensure fundraising goals are met. The three functional areas are:

    • Annual Giving Services: direct marketing programs which employ best practices in marketing and donor centric communications to increase overall number of donors. These activities provide increased and sustained income for the campus.
    • Volunteer Campaigns: volunteer and personal solicitation programs which increase the number of major gift prospects, donors and volunteers for the campus. These programs include reunion gift campaigns, parent board, student philanthropy campaigns, and a future young alumni council.
    • Leadership Annual Giving: develops and executes multi-channel strategies and tactics for acquiring, retaining, and upgrading leadership annual donors to Berkeley.
  • Serve as chief strategist for annual giving programs across campus. Collaborate with campus development directors and other fundraisers on programs, short and long term strategies and new initiatives.
  • Monitor, analyze, and report on overall results to internal and external constituencies. Prepare and deliver reports for the Board of Trustees as needed.
  • Using data and analytics, continually assess all fundraising channels for effectives and pursue viable new channels.
  • Work with campus finance and budget officers to determine allocation of private (Cal Fund) gifts across campus.

Program and campaign development

  • Develop plans and programs for new fundraising initiatives (for example: pipeline program, challenge match program, young alumni, alumni participation)
  • Lead campus-wide annual fund assessment and re-evaluate campus-wide solicitation policy.
  • Serve on University Development and Alumni Relations management leadership and campaign teams.
  • Contribute to UDAR initiatives and business plans, campaign plans, budget, communications, events and overall fundraising strategies.
  • Partner with UDAR leaders to improve donor experience.
  • Staff working groups and report on progress throughout campaign.
  • Develop plans to create a culture of giving back and student philanthropy.
  • Participate on various campus task force committees, representing University Development and Alumni Relations leadership team.
  • Provide leadership for donor event program (Discover Cal) designed to engage alumni, parents and friends with the University and each other through strategic communications, events and volunteer opportunities.


  • Develop and manage small portfolio of top annual fund donors and prospects.
  • Solicit five and six figure gifts.
  • Steward Donors on regular basis, including working with the campus’ lead volunteers, trustees, and campaign co-chairs.
  • Work with staff on development of highest level major gift strategies

Faculty and volunteer support 

  • Advise campus administrators, deans, directors and faculty on fundraising programs and strategies through participation in working groups and regular meetings.
  • Provide staff support and work with the University’s key lead donors and volunteers, including class campaigns, parents fund and foundation trustees.
  • Create meaningful opportunities for volunteer engagement.

Required Qualifications

  • Advanced knowledge of all aspects of fundraising, donor and public relations, including principles, concepts, techniques and procedures.
  • Advanced knowledge of design and implementation of identification, cultivation and solicitation strategies and techniques.
  • Advanced skills to conceive, design, implement and evaluate effective fundraising programs.
  • Advanced knowledge of leadership and management principles, concepts, techniques, et cetera.
  • Advanced knowledge of the campus, its achievements, vision, mission, goals, objectives and issues of concern both on campus as well as in higher education.
  • Advanced leadership/management skills, including skills to select, training, mentor, motivate and evaluate all levels of staff.
  • Advanced written, oral and interpersonal communication skills to establish and maintain effective working relationship within all organizational levels and with outside constituencies.
  • Advanced skills to meet predetermined goals and objectives, including securing gifts and meeting fundraising objectives.
  • Advanced political acumen skills.
  • Advanced strategic planning, critical thinking, analytical and persuasion/negotiation skills.
  • Advanced marketing skills.


  • Bachelor’s degree in related area and/or equivalent experience/training
  • Advanced degree preferred
