Job Overview

  • Under the direction of the Director of Digital, Annual & Leadership Annual (DALA) Giving, this position is responsible for the planning and  execution of projects focused on Annual Giving direct mail, crowdfunding, outsourced calling program, and email activities. Each year, this person will work with the Director to create an Annual Giving solicitation calendar and track the program against agreed upon goals which incorporates unit and divisional solicitation needs. This person will write solicitations, select images, build emails, analyze results, and develop the overall marketing strategy for giving initatives.
  • The incumbent will provide consistent and on-going reporting in regards to Annual Giving results to unit and divisional partners. On a quarterly basis the Assistant Director will provide a summary of activity to various unit and divisional partners.
  • The person in this position will manage other direct marketing activities as necessary and bring an expertise around integrated marketing to campus solicitation strategies. This person will help establish a recurring giving program, work with campus partners on annual giving plans, and lead other digital fundraising activities including Giving Day. This position is also responsible for coordinating all direct mail, crowdfunding, outsourced calling program, and email efforts to assist with the affinity based annual giving efforts and Friends Groups.
  • The person will lead the Giving Day program and be responsible for acting as the project manager of Giving Day. This will include creating and overseeing the planning committee, developing strategy for content and structure, and ensuring successful day-of execution.
  • The person will lead all crowdfunding efforts in Universtity Relations. Including centralized initiatives, such as Giving Tuesday and Fall Giving Weeks, and campus requested initiatives.

  • Salary Information: $75,000/annually. Salary commensurate with qualifications and experience.

Job Duties

  • 35% – Digtial Fundraising Management
    • Collaborate with internal and external colleagues to create, plan, and implement crowdfunding efforts including, the creation of videos, marketing plans, marketing content, and social media.
    • Lead and project manage Giving Day, including management of teams, on campus trainings and office hours, creation and upkeep of Giving Day Toolkit, management of video interns,
    • Lead and project manage centralized crowdfunding programs, such as, Giving Weeks and Giving Tuesday, including the creation of marketing content and other outreach.
    • Serve as liason and product manager for crowdfunding vendor.
    • Serve as liason and product manager for any video platform.
  • 30% – Annual Giving Program Oversight
    • This position works in partnership with Alumni Engagement, Communications & Marketing and Constituent and Donor Engagement staffs, and vendors to develop, implement, and manage a comprehensive Annual Giving program with primary goals of increasing, year over year, the number of donors and dollars to UCSC annual funds under the direction of the Director of DALA Giving.
    • This position maintains and publishes a calendar of Annual Giving activities including unit and divisional based solicitation activites.
    • Monitor, manage and evaluate progress in outsourced calling program and relationship with vendor.
    • Montior, manage, and evaluate progress towards crowdfunding and other digital giving efforts.
    • Serve as the Annual Giving liason at campus events.
    • Hire, manage, and support professional development of Digital & Annual Giving Interns.
  • 15% – Unit and Divisional Realtionship Management
    • Working with partner units throughout campus will develop direct marketing solicitation strategies to meet unit based needs. Throughout the year this individual will update plans, execute strategies, and report results to unit and divisional partners.
    • Works in close partnership with Communications & Marketing to ensure messages for annual giving and membership materials are in line with the overarching communcations stragies.
    • Works with outside commmuncations vendors (graphic designers, copywriters, copyeditors, mailing house,etc.) to create strategic annual giving marketing materials.
  • 10% – Integrated Marketing Strategies
    • Maintain a functional expertise around integrated marketing strategies to assist University Relations colleagues in development of multi-channel solicitation strategies.
    • Will analyze calendars and solicitation strategies for opportunities to utilize multiple communication strategies to ensure greatest responsiveness.
  • 10% – General program support and coordination
    • Manage assigned expenditures in the Annual Giving Budget.
    • Call declined credit card pledge payment donors.
    • Monitor purchase order payments with vendors as needed.
    • Reserve campus space for on campus meetings.
    • As needed will provide support to the creation of solicitations for various strategies.
    • As assigned by the Director of DALA Giving, this position will perform other project management tasks as assigned.
    • Other duties as assigned.

Required Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s degree in related area and / or equivalent experience / training.
  • Superior written and verbal communication skills and experience with writing appeals, solicitations, drafting proposals, creating marketing materials.  Ability to prepare and deliver presentations to both small and large groups.
  • Excellent interpersonal skills with the ability to work with a myriad of people of differing temperaments, socioeconomic backgrounds, and political/ethical philosophies, and to be tactful, diplomatic, and attentive in personal contacts with donors, external constituencies, and university personnel.
  • Experience with digital giving, such as crowdfunding and Giving Day.
  • Excellent time mananagement and organizational skills, including an ability to prioritize projects and work flow, meet deadlines for simultaneous projects , and make decisions using independent judgment.
  • Excellent analytical skills to comprehensively analyze fund-raising issues and performance in a multifaceted way and possess strong problem-solving skills to develop innovative solutions to complex issues.
  • An innovative approach to work tasks, with the ability to be flexible and creatively solve problems as they arise. Tolerance for ambiguity and ability to pivot work flow quickly when needed.
  • Experience with donor data bases, including running reports and reviewing analytics. Advanced computer skills, preferably in a mixed Macintosh-Windows environment, with knowledge of common software programs, e.g., Word, Excel, Access, FileMaker Pro, etc..
  • Experience with using social media to support annual giving strategies and boost messaging.
  • Experience and knowledge of fund-raising principles, including abilities to conceptualize, analyze, and implement multi-channel fund-raising strategies.
  • Ability to both work effectively in a team environment and in an independent unsupervised capacity.
  • Ability to generate and test new ideas to meet the demands of the evolving higher education fundraising landscape.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Experience with the principles and ethics of professional fundraising, preferably in an educational institution, with demonstrated abilities to successfully identify, qualify, cultivate, solicit and steward donors to secure private gift support.
  • Knowledge and understanding of academic administration, academic and research goals, and external relations goals of a research institution and academic unit.
  • Supervisory skills to direct, guide, and evaluate the efforts of support staff, administrative staff, volunteers and/or student interns.
  • Financial and budgetary skills and knowledge sufficient to develop and monitor an operational budget.

Special Conditions

  • Selected candidate will be required to pass a pre-employment criminal history background check.
  • Must possess a valid license to drive in the state of California.
  • Will be required to complete Title IX (Sexual Harassment) training every two years.
  • Ability to travel frequently as a University Relations representative, and/or on behalf of UC Santa Cruz business.
  • Ability to work occasional nights and weekends as required.
