General Summary of Position:

University Relations is responsible for promoting the university to the campus, prospective students and families, alumni, granting institutions, legislators, the region and the general public.

The position is an experienced professional who writes on behalf of the chancellor and senior university leaders with an added emphasis on elevating advancement messaging to strengthen relationships with alumni and university donors. The position will report to the Executive Director of Communications and will also take direction from the Director of Editorial Services.

Minimum Qualifications (Required):

  • Bachelor’s degree in communications, journalism, English or related field.
  • At least 5 years of experience in communications, public relations, advancement communications or speechwriting
  • Demonstrated experience in speechwriting or development writing and writing on behalf of others in a variety of formats and styles for multiple audiences
  • Evidence of strong writing, editing and communications skills
  • Knowledge of AP Style
  • Ability to meet deadlines and multitask

  • Experience in higher education marketing, communications or development
  • Strong interpersonal skills
  • Ability to make sound editorial judgments
  • Ability to take direction and work as part of a team, as well as independently
  • Experience developing and implementing communications plans
  • Cultivate relationships within campus community and help University Relations and Advancement colleagues make educated decisions about content
  • Discretion required in speaking with university leaders, alumni, donors, students, faculty and staff about campus matters
