Workshop: Maximizing Annual Fund Leadership Gifts

Overview


For the annual fund, just as any fundraising effort, the majority of the money raised will come from a relatively few number of leadership donors. Identifying the prospects who have the highest capacity and inclination—and then engaging, soliciting, and stewarding them in a highly personalized way—will increase the likelihood that they will make a leadership gift and continue to remain involved and supportive in the future. Join us on June 9th and 10th for a two-day interactive workshop that will help you learn how to become an effective frontline gift officer and increase leadership giving to your annual fund. Participants will have an opportunity to:

Learn how to determine an individual's gift capacity, their interests and inclination for support, and how to use that information to develop an effective prospect outreach plan.

2:00pm - Small Group Breakouts

Engage in small group activities and discussions with colleagues to talk through issues, exchange ideas, and participate in skill-building exercises.

2:45pm - Break (30 minutes)

3:15pm - Producing Personalized Direct Appeals

Find out how to develop personalized direct mail and email appeals that resonate with your best prospects and compel them to give.

4:00pm - Small Group Breakouts

Engage in small group activities and discussions with colleagues to talk through issues, exchange ideas, and participate in skill-building exercises.

Kristin Burnette | University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign

Kristin Burnette is Director of Annual Giving at the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign, where she manages a centralized, pipeline program and collaborates on annual giving, data, stewardship and engagement strategies. Her over 10-year career at UIUC has included advancement and administrative positions for Institutional Advancement, the Department of Chemistry, and the School of Art + Design. Kristin holds an MS in Library and Information Science and a BA in Art History, both from the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign.

 

Joshua Nay | University of Pennsylvania

Josh Nay is the Director, Class Giving and Reunion Programs at University of Pennsylvania, where he has been involved in various aspects of class giving for 7 years. Previously, he led volunteer engagement efforts at Villanova and held progressive positions at Sigma Nu Educational Foundation. A longtime volunteer with Boy Scouts of America, Josh holds an MS in Nonprofit Leadership from University of Pennsylvania and a BA in Museum Studies from Gettysburg College.

 

Meredith Johnston | The Scripps Research Institute

Meredith Johnston is the Vice President of Philanthropy at The Scripps Research Institute in La Jolla, California, where she currently oversees the comprehensive fundraising efforts. She's led annual and major gift programs at The University of California, Riverside and the University of California, San Diego and served previously as the Associate Vice President for Annual Giving at Oklahoma State University. A recognized industry speaker and CASE presenter, Meredith holds a B.A. in Literature from the University of North Texas.
 

Elizabeth Keppel | Johns Hopkins University

Elizabeth Keppel is the Director of Strategic Priorities, Annual Giving at The Johns Hopkins University, where she leads the university's undergraduate alumni participation strategy. With a career that has spanned direct marketing, frontline fundraising, volunteer and board management, and special campaigns, she recently completed five years at the University of Florida, most recently serving as the Director of Annual Giving & Strategic Initiatives. She has also worked in annual giving at William & Mary. Elizabeth holds a B.A. in Government & Philosophy and an M.Ed. in Higher Education Administration from William & Mary.
 

Dan Allenby | Principal & Founder at Annual Giving Network

Dan is an author, speaker, and consultant who has worked with educational institutions for over 25 years to improve their fundraising results. An internationally-recognized expert on annual giving, he is the recipient of CASE’s prestigious “Crystal Apple” award for teaching excellence. His book – Ideas for Annual Giving – offers designs for helping organizations increase their levels of sustainable philanthropic support. Dan served as the assistant vice president for annual giving at Boston University during its $1 billion capital campaign, and previously led fundraising and marketing programs at Tufts University, Georgetown University, and the National Geographic Society. He served on the faculty for CASE’s Summer Institute in Educational Fundraising, and chaired its Senior Annual Giving Professionals Conference and Annual Giving Workshop for five collective terms. Dan holds a B.A. in History from James Madison University and an M.B.A. from Boston College.
