Associate Director, Next Generation Philanthropy

The University of Virginia’s Office of Engagement seeks an Associate Director, Next Generation Philanthropy, to join the University Annual Giving (UAG) team. The Associate Director engages students and recent graduates philanthropically, educating undergraduate students on philanthropy and developing a robust fundraising strategy for undergraduate alumni of the last decade.

Working with the Senior Director, University Annual Giving, the Associate Director will develop a seamless engagement and philanthropic transition from student to alumni, building a solid foundation for lifetime giving. The incumbent also serves as the UAG liaison to partners across Grounds to assist with the Advancement Community’s cultivation and stewardship efforts for future alumni and recent graduates. This position will also help to identify, train, and manage peer-to-peer fundraising volunteers.

In addition to partnering with UAG’s direct marketing team to devise creative messaging for multi-channel solicitations, the Associate Director coordinates fundraising efforts and new media, meeting donor acquisition goals, including soliciting alumni for gifts directly and through volunteers.

Responsibilities:

  • Develop revenue and donor goals. Advise, educate, and solicit alumni using digital gift officer tools, Cavalier Connect (student engagement center) contacts, social media, and direct marketing
  • Recruit, train, and manage a substantive group of student and alumni volunteers, providing updated information and deadlines, evaluating individual donor and volunteer needs, and offering other personal support
  • Collaborate with the UVA Alumni Association on student and young alumni programming
  • Develop, foster, and maintain positive student and alumni relations to keep them engaged and eager to give back to the University.
  • Plan and attend meetings and events on and off-Grounds.
  • Perform other duties as assigned.

Required Qualifications:

  • Bachelor’s degree and three years of fundraising, alumni relations, student affairs, or relevant experience
  • Highly motivated and energetic, ability to show initiative and work independently
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills
  • Outstanding organizational and interpersonal skills, including attention to detail and the ability to collaborate with diverse constituents (colleagues, students, donors, prospects)
  • Ability to handle diverse, simultaneous tasks and attend to follow-through
  • Ability to initiate and enjoy direct communication with students and alumni with a customer-service orientation.
  • Professionalism, maturity, and an ability to maintain confidentiality
  • Demonstrated managerial skills and flexibility
  • Knowledge of digital communication techniques
  • Appreciation and respect for principles of diversity, equity, and inclusion. Ability to engage with diverse audiences (age, gender, nationality, ethnicity, profession, sexual orientation, etc.).

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Bachelor’s degree and five years of fundraising experience
    • Demonstrated ability to manage donor relationships
    • Entrepreneurial spirit with demonstrated success in building new ways of engagement and stewardship
    • Knowledge of the principles of philanthropy, higher education, and relationship management
    • Working knowledge of database management, engagement software (ex. Advance, EverTrue, ThankView)

This position will remain open until filled.  This is an exempt level, benefited position.
