Associate Director of Direct Marketing, Annual Giving

The University of Virginia Office of Engagement seeks an Associate Director of Direct Marketing to join the University Annual Giving team. The Associate Director will support the development and execution of direct marketing strategies for a multi-channel (print, email, web, and social) and donor-centric communication strategy. This strategy engages constituents throughout the annual giving cycle, from identification to solicitation to stewardship

The position will manage a portfolio of fundraising partners, including schools, centers, and programs.  The ideal candidate is a highly motivated communicator capable of delivering exceptional customer service to execute strategic annual giving marketing initiatives for partners.

In collaboration with the Senior Associate Director, the Associate Director will set and manage annual direct marketing plans for individual partners. This includes, but is not limited to, scheduling and leading discovery/intake meetings, preparing monthly and bi-annual reports, interpreting analytics and adjusting marketing plans as needed, and serving as the partner’s primary point of contact throughout the annual giving cycle. This role will collaborate with the direct marketing team’s creative and production arms in organizing marketing timelines.

The University Annual Giving team plays an integral and strategic role within University Advancement. This team works cross-functionally, producing donor-centric direct marketing strategies and creative output, leading to growth in philanthropic support to the University.

Responsibilities:

  • Serve as primary partner contact within University Annual Giving for a portfolio of partners

  • Build and maintain strategic relationships with current and future partners

  • Collaborate with the creative and production members of the Direct Marketing team on setting specific project objectives and parameters for optimal executions

  • Translate partner goals into creative and strategic campaign proposals and strategies

  • Manage multi-channel direct marketing programs that support renewal, retention, and acquisition of annual giving donors building the pipeline for major gifts

  • Collaborate with key stakeholders across Advancement to support projects and initiatives

  • Manage program and project ideation process by leading the development of creative concepts and guide the packaging and delivery of ideas to the partner and production team

  • Stay current on direct marketing best practices and maximize the use of data to make strategic recommendations

  • Create a systematic, process-driven approach to partner outreach and relationship management

  • Collaborate with senior leadership and other marketing colleagues to align our internal goals with new and existing partner relationships

  • Measure and report the results of various projects with partners and make recommendations for future projects in collaboration with the Data team

  • Research and develop a broad understanding of partners’ constituents, mission, and other marketing initiatives and events impacting their constituency

  • Perform other duties as assigned

Required Qualifications:

  • A bachelor’s degree with 3 years of experience in communications, marketing, or related field.

  • Excellent interpersonal skills and the ability to collaborate with diverse constituents.

  • Must exhibit strong strategic planning, analytical, and implementation skills and must be able to lead efforts in setting priorities and meeting goals.

  • The ability to speak persuasively in public, they must be an effective leader with the ability to work across Grounds and towards shared goals.

  • Detail-oriented, efficient, and able to handle diversified tasks concurrently.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Experience in annual giving, marketing, alumni relations, customer service, sales, fundraising, or higher education.

  • Demonstrated ability to manage partner/client relationships.

  • Entrepreneurial spirit with demonstrated success in driving new business from concept through the execution phase.

  • Understanding of the principles of philanthropy, higher education, and relationship management.

  • Knowledge of annual giving direct marketing best practices.

  • Experience in analysis of and reporting on marketing strategies.

  • Ability to communicate effectively and tactfully with persons on all levels and across many channels including in person, on the phone, and in writing.

  • Experience with changes in organizational behavior and the implementation of new structures.

  • Project Management certification.
