The University of Virginia School of Engineering and Applied Science seeks an experienced and accomplished Director of Development. Reporting to the Executive Director of Development, the Director of Development will play a leadership role on a growing, highly integrated, and collaborative advancement team pursuing ambitious fundraising goals at the mid-point of the University’s multi-billion dollar Honor the Future campaign. This is an excellent opportunity for an experienced professional to make a valuable contribution in support of the academic and research missions of UVA Engineering.

The Director of Development will:

  • Work with alumni, corporations, foundations, and other key constituent prospects to solicit and secure six-figure and above major gifts for UVA Engineering.

  • Advance the mission, vision and short- and long-term goals of the University and UVA Engineering, including campaign priorities, using agreed upon metrics and accountability.

  • Create and execute fund raising plans that utilize best practices in major giving including identifying, cultivating, soliciting and stewarding major/principal gift donors.

  • Serve as a member of the University Advancement team and collaborate with peers in prospect strategy development and prospect management.

  • Assist UVA Engineering leadership and the Executive Director in developing program funding priorities and cases for support.

  • Serve as team lead for one or more departments in UVA Engineering and staff School leadership through regular communication, collaboration and strategy development.

  • Travel nationally to establish long-term partnerships, create outstanding constituent experiences and strengthen existing relationships to fund immediate and long-term goals of the School and University.

Required Qualifications:

  • Bachelor’s degree

  • Eight years of relevant experience

  • Demonstrated success in fundraising, sales or managing relationships with high-net worth individuals

  • Ability to frequently travel domestically with occasional evening and weekend work

  • Valid Driver’s License

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Master’s Degree

  • Prior experience in non-profit or higher education fundraising and staffing senior leaders and volunteers

  • Track record of demonstrating a high degree of initiative, flexibility and will have the skills to shape and be shaped by an evolving fundraising initiative

  • A high degree of personal integrity and ability to keep the big picture in focus while attending to the small details

  • Experience using data to evaluate and plan

  • Superb oral and written communication skills

  • Experience mentoring junior professionals to be successful in a matrix organization

  • Preference will be given to applicants with previous experience in a leadership role in advancement, administration, and/or higher education.
